The LM7805L-TA3-T is a fixed 5V positive voltage regulator from UTC (友顺) in a TO-220 package. 1A output current, 35V maximum input voltage, 2V dropout. Thermal shutdown, over-current protection, and SOA protection built in.
It is the classic 7805 — the same design that has been in production for decades. The TO-220 package bolts onto a heatsink, making it practical when you need to dissipate several watts. The 35V input rating handles 12V, 24V, and even 30V rails.
One thing to know upfront: it is NOT a low-dropout regulator. It needs at least 7V input for a regulated 5V output.
It is a linear voltage regulator. You feed it a DC voltage between 7V and 35V on the input pin, and it outputs a stable 5V. The difference between input and output is burned off as heat.
The 7805 is not an LDO. It needs 2V headroom — 7V input minimum for 5V output. It includes over-current protection and thermal shutdown (150°C junction).

Industrial Control: 24V to 5V for logic circuits. TO-220 with heatsink handles the heat.

Output voltage test: Apply 12V to input. Should read 4.8V–5.2V.
Dropout test: Reduce input voltage slowly. Regulation should hold until about 7V.
